Lima: Interesting Places To Visit

Lima is one of the oldest cities in South America. As such there are many different things to see and to do. Different parts of the city all seem to have something of interest in them. Throughout Lima one can visit museums, dine in great restaurants, see old architecture, stroll on the beach, or much more!

Here Are Just A Few Of The Things You Can Do

Lima's Historic City Center

The Cathedral

Construction on this cathedral began in 1535 at approximately the same time Lima was founded. The first structure was rather small and in 1564 the architect Jeronimo de Aliaga began to enhance the structure based on the designs of the cathedral in Sevilla. Today this impressive cathedral dominates the Plaza de Armas.

Santo Domingo

The oldest convent in Lima and for that matter in Peru is Santo Domingo. Santo Domingo today is comprised of a series of small courtyards and intimate cloisters. Some of the icons of early Lima society can be found here such as Santa Rosa de Lima, San Martin de Porress and Juan Masias.

San Francisco

Right around the corner from the Plaza de Armas is the church/convent of San Francisco. Construction on this complex was started in 1542 and competed in 1674. Architecturally it is one of the more interesting structures in the area. Stroll around and enjoy the beauty of the buildings. For a complete change of pace head underground to visit the catacombs to see thousands of Lima's former residents.

Historic Mansions

Palacio de Torre Tagle

One of the more interesting pieces of architecture in Lima. You will see examples of Creole, Andalusian and Moorish influence in this building. Currently the building is home to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Casa Aliaga

This mansion has a long history. The mansion is said to have been built over the top of a private temple of a local chief by the name of Taulischusco. The conquistador of Peru (Francisco Pizarro) gave the land to Jeronimo de Aliaga who then constructed the mansion. Interestingly the mansion is still owned by descendants of Aliaga.

Casa Goyeneche or Rada

A beautiful mansion that shows the distinctive French influence that was prevalent during the 18th century. The building is notable for its beautiful balconies and doorways.

The Presidential Palace

This structure is prominently located to one side of the massive Plaza de Armas. It is the main building used by the President of Peru and houses apartments, fantastic halls and countless pieces of art. The building is also called the Casa de Pizarro. This is due to the fact that Pizarro administered Peru from a building that used to be situated on this site.
