Spanish In Lima:
A City Overview: Lima
Lima
"The City Of Kings" is a large, but very interesting
city located on the Pacific Coast of Peru. Though the landscape
surrounding the city is uninteresting, the architecture, the
people and the history makes Lima an interesting place to
spend time during a Spanish study abroad program.
Lima
is a city which loves festivals. For our Spanish language
students, this presents the opportunity to get an insight
into the local culture. Throughout the year, Lima has a variety
of very interesting festivals. One of the more important and
popular festivals is the Señor de los Milagros (Lord
of the Miracles". This festival is held during the month
of October and held in honor of Lima's patron saint. Parades
are held with participants wearing purple robes, singing ringing
bells and burning incense.
October
also marks the beginning of the bullfighting season. The main
events are held in the Plaza de Ancho where the best bullfighters
from around the world come to compete for the Escapulario
de Oro.
Some
other important festivals include the Feria del Pacifico in
November and the March wine harvest festival. Check with the
staff at the Spanish language school for details about the
many festivals and activities available in Lima.
Any
trip to Lima should start at the Plaza de Armas. This is the
historic center of Lima. On all sides of this impressive square
stands some of the more important and interesting colonial
architecture found in Lima. You can see the impressive Government
Palace to one side, the massive Cathedral to the other, the
Municipalidad opposite the Cathedral, plus many other interesting
building in the immediate area.
Lima
is home to a variety of interesting museums. Some of the more
interesting museums include the Gold Museum, the Museum of
Anthropology and Archaeology, and the National Museum. These
museums will give you a good taste of Peruvian history. Subject
matter includes items for the distant past, indigenous groups,
colonial history, all the way up to more recent history. After
visiting these museums, there are many other minor museums
that have some very interesting collections. Check with the
staff at the Spanish school to find out how to get to these
museums.
Besides
offering a wealth of historical and cultural sites of interest,
Lima has plenty to offer on a day by day basis. The two best
areas to spend time in during your Spanish language program
are definitely San Isidro and Miraflores. These are the two
most upscale areas of Lima. Both areas are home to an abundance
of shops, cafes, theaters, restaurants and bars. These are
the areas where you will spend the vast majority of your time
in Lima. Miraflores also provides easy access to an area of
beaches called the Costa Verde, which are popular during the
warmer times of the year.
