Cusco: A Magical
And Mysterious Place
Cusco is easily one of the most interesting
places to visit in Peru. Cusco is a city that has a little
bit of everything: Spanish colonial architecture, Inca ruins,
interesting local culture, and stunning mountain scenery.
The archaeological sites are all a must see. Within a very
short distance of the city, the traveler can marvel at the
work of the Inca at such places as Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Sacsayhuaman,
and of course the city in the clouds, Machu Picchu. Getting
to Machu Picchu from Cusco is easy. You can take the train,
or hike the fabled Inca Trail. If you are in shape, consider
the trail option.
If you are looking for something off the
beaten track, Cusco is a great jumping off point. Check out
the Inca ruins at Choquequirau. Some say these ruins are just
as impressive as those found at Machu Picchu. You may also
consider visiting Vilcabamba which was the last outpost of
the Inca, and from which Manco Inca used as a base of operations
when fighting Spanish conquistadors.
Once you get tired of visiting ruins, Cusco
still will not let you down. The city is a fantastic jumping
off point for a variety of adventure sport activities. Biking
in the Andes is a great option for many. It is one of the
best ways to enjoy the views and explore the countryside.
Nearby rages the Apurimac River, a popular destination for
those interested in excellent white water rafting. Needless
to say, being situated in the mountains, Cusco allows hikers
easy access to both moderate difficulty hikes, or much more
difficult ascents.
Within Cusco one will not be bored. The city
is home to incredible Spanish colonial architecture. Start
off in the Plaza de Armas and work you way out. From churches
to old palaces Cusco has a lot to offer. Within the city one
can still find Inca ruins as well. The stonework of the Inca
was of such quality that the Spanish had difficulty tearing
down structures. As a result the foundations of many colonial
buildings are Inca stonework.
Cusco as with any decent sized city is home
to an abundance of shops, bars, restaurants and shops. There
is enough things to do to keep all but the most jaded traveler
busy.
A final reason to enjoy Cusco is the festivals.
Throughout the year the city plays host to a variety of fascinating
festivals. Some have Spanish origins, while other are based
on the long standing traditions of the Inca.
