In Cusco: A City Overview: Cusco
Cusco
is one of the most interesting destinations a language student
can go to to learn Spanish. This former capital of the Inca
Empire offers the visitor an interesting mix of both Inca
and Spanish colonial sites of interest.
It
is said that Cusco is the historical center of both Peru and
South America. The city is home to a variety of impressive
Incan and Spanish colonial buildings. Some of the more interesting
places of interest include the Cathedral, La Merced, the Temple
of San Blas, the Korikanch (Inca Temple of the Sun), the Amaru
Cancha, and much more!
As
in most cities and towns in Peru, the city revolves around
the Plaza de Armas. Surrounding the plaza Spanish students
and visitors alike will find impressive Spanish colonial buildings,
bars, restaurants, shops and much more. Nearby you will find
many other colonial buildings built on the remains of Inca
stonework.
Outside
of Cusco one can visit many other sites of interest including
Machu Picchu, the hilltop fortifications of Sacsayhuaman,
Pisac, Yucay, Ollaytaytambo, and a variety of small local
market towns.
