A Different Culture:
A Different World
The culture of Peru today is due the combination
of Spanish and indigenous cultures. This mix of cultures has
made
the country of Peru a country of interesting cultural contrasts.
Prior
to the arrival of the Spanish, Peru was a major producer of
quality artistic items. While most people associate Peru with
the Inca, the country was also home to important groups such
as the Chavin, Nazca, Moche and Wari to name just a few. These
groups developed high quality textiles, sculptures, jewelry
and pottery. Each of these groups was also responsible for
some rather interesting architectural achievements as well.
Today the most well known location is Machu Picchu with was
built by the Incas.
Intellectually
Peru like other countries has gone through various stages.
Prior to the arrival of the Spanish, the Inca dominated. Then
of course you had a period where Spanish thought prevailed.
Later a more general interest in European Romanticism became
dominant. In the 20th century there has been a revival and
pride in the works and accomplishments of indigenous cultures.
In
the period marking the Spanish domination you find an interesting
mix of Spanish and Inca tradition. This combination brought
about what is known as Creole art. The combination of two
distinct influence brought about a rich history of painting,
sculpture and pottery.
In
the early 1900's a re-awakening of indigenous art took place.
Artists looked to the past for ideas and inspiration.
As
you travel through Peru today you will find a stunningly rich
cultural heritage.
