Overview Of Peru
Peru
is one of the more interesting countries found in South America.
This Andean nation counts as its neighbors: Ecuador, Colombia,
Brazil, Chile and Bolivia. Despite its size, Peru is a wonderfully
diverse country home to many varieties of terrain and climate.
Peru is home to vast stretches of Amazon rainforest, impressive
deserts such as the Atacama Desert, and of course, the Andes,
second in size only to the mighty Himalayas.
Peru
is known to many as the "Land of the Incas'. This title
however fails to take into account the many other important
indigenous groups who made an impact upon Peru such as the
Chavin, the Moche and the Wari to name a few. As you travel
through this impressive country you will have a chance to
see some of the works of these past peoples: Machu Picchu,
the Nazca Lines, the Sechin Ruins and the Sillustani Ruins.
There are of course many other interesting sites of interest
spread throughout Peru.
While

an amazing country. Each region of Peru is very different
from the others. Half of Peru is home to the Peruvian Amazon
Basin. The numbers of plant, animal and insect species is
absolutely amazing!
Peru
however is most well known for the Andes. The starting point
for any exploration of the Andes is Cusco, a beautiful Spanish
colonial city that once was home to the imperial seat of the
Inca Empire. Today this magnificent city is the most popular
destination in Peru. Just an hour flight from Lima, Cusco
is a fascinating mix of Inca stonework and Spanish colonial
architecture. Throughout the city one can find excellent examples
of Inca ruins and some amazing Spanish colonial architecture.
Make sure you stop by the Cathedral in the Plaza de Armas.
It is said the Cathedral is home to the premier collection
of Spanish colonial artwork in the Western Hemisphere.
Just
outside Cusco lies a the impressive Sacred Valley of the Incas.
A trip to this valley is a must for any visitor to Cusco.
The scenery is spectacular and some of the stops along they
way are absolutely fascinating. Will visiting such interesting
sites such as Pisac and Ollantaytambo you will also see mountains
rising over 20,000ft into the air. Besides impressive scenery
and old Inca sites the valley is home to some great market
towns as well. Stop by and pick up rugs, pottery or any number
of other interesting items.
The
highlight for many visitors to Peru of course is Machu Picchu.
Check with the staff at our Spanish language schools for information
about how to visit this mysterious place. You have three ways
in which to get to Machu Picchu. You can take a helicopter,
hike the Inca Trail, or take the train. If you are in great
shape and have 3-4 days, hike the Inca Trail. It will be an
experience you will never forget. The vast majority of visitors
to Machu Picchu however will take the 4 hour train ride to
the site. Most trips will be a day trip. Check with the Spanish
language school to see about setting up an overnight trip.
The extra time spent in the location is well worth it.
